Solution 1- End QB POS shell process and rename the user.config file in the shell folder

This happens due to interruption in the background processes of QuickBooks POS or if the user.config file inside the shell folder turns into an unsupported format for the software. You’ll have to rename the file to recreate it the next time you launch the software. Apply the steps given below to rectify this issue-

  1. Press and hold Ctrl + Shift + Esc to launch the task manager.
  2. Navigate to the Processes tab and single-click the QBPOS shell process.
  3. Click on End task at the bottom of the tab.

After its process is stopped, you’ll have to go to C:\Users\(Current User Name)\AppData\Local\Intuit to find the QB POS files. Use the steps below-

  1. Click on the View option on the top and mark the checkbox for Hidden items with a single click.
  2. Sort out the files using the Date Modified filter and open the QBPOSshell.exe folder.
  3. Right-click on the user.config file inside the folder and tap Rename.
  4. Add ‘old’ as an extension to the file name and save it.
  5. Rerun QuickBooks Point of Sale.
