Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has long been linked with a move to Manchester United (MU). The Netherlands international is predicted to be a key figure in Manchester United's new squad at Old Trafford.

According to Metro reports, the new Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag had contacted the player and asked him to move to Old Trafford. Unfortunately, these efforts received a negative response from De Jong.

The 25-year-old footballer is claimed not to be interested in playing with Manchester United. The reason, the Red Devils lost the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League next season, after being thrown into the sixth position of the Premier League standings this season.

For information, Ten Hag and De Jong worked together when they were still working at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Both of them succeeded in making achievements by leading Ajax Amsterdam to the semifinals of the 2018/2019 Champions League season.

Ten Hag seems to want to repeat the glorious moments with De Jong. He has been provided with 120 million pounds by the club to spend in the summer transfer market. Quoted from Metro, Ten Hag is ready to spend 70 million pounds to bring De Jong from Camp Nou.

Barcelona did not deny the departure of De Jong. The club currently does need funds to balance the books in the midst of the financial crisis they are experiencing. Although he had refused, De Jong is reported to have started to open up to a potential transfer to MU.

Metro said De Jong appreciated Ten Hag's efforts to persuade him to play with the Red Devils. Even so, staying at Barcelona is still the main preference for the former Ajax player.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez actually does not want to part with Frenkie de Jong. The Spanish tactician had emphasized that De Jong was an important figure as well as a regular starter in his squad at Camp Nou.

"I've said many times that Frenkie de Jong is very important. He's always been my starter. For me he (is a player) fundamental," Xavi said as quoted by Metro reports.

However, the financial crisis could have forced Barcelona to release Frenkie de Jong. The reason is, the La Liga giants need additional funds to bring in new players ahead of next season's competition.

As for Pedri, Gavi, and Sergio Busquets, it was noted that they had shown brilliant performances in the Blaugrana's midfield last season. No wonder Frenkie de Jong is one of the most potential players for Barcelona to sell.

If Frenkie de Jong persists in refusing MU's offer, the Red Devils must immediately explore other targets in the summer transfer market. The reason, their midfield requires additional power. Paul Pogba will leave after his contract expires.

The French player has been widely linked with a return to his former club, Juventus. Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic are also reportedly set to leave Old Trafford. The Mirror said the two would leave in June.

Manchester United now only has Scott McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek as senior central midfielders. As for Bruno Fernandes more often operates in a different role. Therefore, the arrival of De Jong is a crucial aspect for the Red Devils ahead of next season.

For information, the Red Devils are not the only club that puts their heart on De Jong. The Dutch midfielder has become a hot property in this year's transfer window. He is in great demand thanks to his solid performances at club and international level.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City are reportedly also interested in hiring the services of De Jong. Both teams are known to be strong financially, so it will not be difficult to hijack De Jong from Barcelona.
