The new manager of Manchester United or MU Erik ten Hag insists his club's main target in the 2022/2023 season is a return to the Champions League. The Red Devils, he said, must enter the top four.

The Dutchman has now officially started his job as manager of the 20-times English champions. In the 2021-22 Premier League season, MU is in sixth place in the standings.

Ten Hag was present at the stadium during Manchester United's 0-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Sunday. However, this result is still enough to claim a Europa League spot for next season, as seventh-place West Ham United lost at Brighton & Hove Albion.

On the other hand, the former Ajax manager believes that the Red Devils will be able to face Manchester City and Liverpool during his tenure.

"Right now I admire them [Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp]. I admire them both. They are playing, at the moment, absolutely fantastic football - both Liverpool and Manchester City," Ten Hag told reporters on Monday.

"But you will always see that an era can end. I can't wait to fight them and I'm sure all the other clubs in the Premier League want to do that."

First Target
However, the Dutchman has accepted that it will take time to help the club return to the top of English football, so a top-four finish in the Premier League next season is a key target.

"I said this was his project, to bring Man United back to the top, but we also have to accept the current situation," Ten Hag told MUTV. "First of all, Man United are included in the Champions League, so that would be the first target."

United are still in the hunt for the top four in the Premier League heading into the final stages of the season, but their disappointing performances allowed Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to go above and beyond, with the latter [Tottenham] eventually claiming fourth place in the table ahead of them. North London rivals.

United finished 35 points behind champions Man City, 34 behind second-placed Liverpool and 13 behind Spurs, who have been in impressive form in the latter stages of the season under Antonio Conte, who has been linked with the job at Old Trafford.

United also struggled in England's two main cup competitions during the 2021-22 season, being knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round and the EFL Cup in the third.

Ten Hag led Ajax to two Dutch Cups during his time in Amsterdam. Hence, he also detailed the importance of other competitions apart from the Premier League.

"For me, every game is important," he told MUTV. "We want to win every game and that has to be the attitude of everyone: the players, but also the staff and everyone else at the club."

"Every game is important and we will give our best in every game to win and progress."
